The opening of the Vienna Art Book Fair #2 will be accompanied by the animated Short-Film “Fabuli”. Fotoausstellung SPURENSUCHE 2023 und Acht Kurzfilm-Portraits
Exhibition SPURENSUCHE 2023 and Eight Short Film Portraits

SPURENSUCHE 2023
Geschäftsportale in Wien – Beobachtungen urbaner Veränderung
Shopfronts in Vienna – Observations on Urban Change

Karl Seiser e.U. (Österreich 2022, 4‘27“)
  • Berufsbekleidung Schnepf (Österreich 2022, 5‘00“)
  • Autoreifen Milcic (Österreich 2022, 6‘12“)
  • Gastwirtschaft Rohrböck (Österreich 2022, 6‘11“)
  • Lackstätter Geschirr (Österreich 2022, 4‘29“)

Robin Waart & Kunstraum Lakeside
Lakeside Library

Lakeside Library is a duplicate of Kunstraum Lakeside’s bookshelf. This unsystematic but ‘biographical’ library comprises 420 artist’s publications and theory books accumulated since the founding of the space in 2005. Re-collected in its entirety and in response to the Kunstraum’s presentation furniture (an artistic intervention by Josef Dabernig, itself conceived in pairs) the shelf formed an integral element of the group exhibition Wörthersee, Wörtersee – a network of relationships. Here, transferred to VABF#2, the copied library exists in parallel with, but also independently from, its identical counterpart in Klagenfurt.

Kunstraum Lakeside’s, Robin Waart’s and some other artists’ publications will be available at Project Room 1.

Book Nomad
The Book Nomad project is initiated by abC (art book in China) Art Book Fair. Focusing on “Asianness,” actors of the artists’ book scene from different cities participate with their own selection of art publications, revealing different cultural perspectives.

The project follows the curatorial motto “Nomadic and Imagined” and is shown in the form of a growing traveling exhibition: the Vienna Art Book Fair (VABF) presents a total of 57 books, 52 of which were selected by the previous participants and already exhibited in their spaces. Following the concept of Book Nomad, VABF includes 5 more publications by this year participating artists and publishers to the book list, which will be shown and further added together with the other publications in the following exhibition venues as well.

Alltag

On Book Waste
Talk by Marc Fischer, Half Letter Press / Temporary Services, USA

Half Letter Press (US) is a publishing imprint and online store initiated by the group Temporary Services. Temporary Services is Brett Bloom & Marc Fischer. They have published booklets as an element of their collaborative work since 1998. Temporary Services started Half Letter Press in 2008 to publish work by others and build long-term support and expanded audiences for people that work creatively in experimental ways.

For this talk, Marc will give an overview of their publishing history and present Artist Publishers Reflect on Book Waste. Building on previous publications like Book Waste Book, Self-Reliance Library and What Problems Can Artist Publishers Solve? in this new title 7 artist publishers reflect on their experiences of waste in the making of their books. They describe problems they faced in the past and are working to avoid in the future, lessons learned, changes they are making or have made to make their work less wasteful, interesting things they do with waste materials, and tips or tricks to have a less ecologically damaging publishing practice.

Morley House
Text as Image, Image as Text

Morley House, an artist duo that consists of a visual artist and a writer, builds narratives that fuse image and text.
In this talk the artists will reflect on the languages they use in their practice: writing, drawing, layout, translating and resisting translation.

A page is an open space for experiment.
A book is a carrier of experience.

Bernhard Cella in conversation with Thomas Metzner
Book presentation and machine reading

Thomas Metzner. Stille Post
- Was spricht?

She smiled with another ear." / "And He smiled another ear." - Translation programs function through databases and algorithmic access. In the process, they produce semantic errors and aesthetic extras, poetic coincidences. ...and this idea: simulating the children's game "Chinese whispers" with Google Translate. The game instructions and a motto are repeatedly translated by a computer: semantically pruned and aesthetically blossomed. Specifically: Kant's maxim "Sapere aude..." (to illuminate your starting point) derived from Google-Afrikaans to Google-Zulu into Google-German (or Google-English). - What moves in the field between different text strings / world references / idioms: "homo ludens" and "homo sapiens"? - What is speaking?

Susanne Bieri.
Swiss artists’ books – Schweizer Künstlerbücher – Livres d’artistes suisses – Libri d’artista svizzeri

With the publication "SCHWEIZER KÜNSTLERBÜCHER - LIVRES D'ARTISTES SUISSES - LIBRI D'ARTISTA SVIZZERI - SWISS ARTISTS' BOOKS" the NL plans to close a gap and present an overview of the artist's book as a media phenomenon with a multicultural character in Switzerland since the 1950s. Based on many years of constant research into its own collection - nota bene the most comprehensive collection of artists' books in our country - the publication aims to question the artist's book as the product of an overall artistic achievement and define it as a Swiss cultural phenomenon with an international dimension.
