About

Over the course of three days the Vienna Art Book Fair #4 provides a platform for artists, collectives, self-publishers, small publishing houses, antiquarian booksellers, art libraries, institutions, printers, collectors and for all those who are dedicated to the medium of the book.
︎ see Exhibitor List 2025

On this weekend the Expositur Vordere Zollamtsstraße 7 will be turned into a booklovers adventure park.

The artists’ book as a democratic work of art will be the focus of the
VABF. Hence, it is of great importance for us to keep the event free and
open to the public.

The Book Nomad project is
initiated by abC (art book in China) Art Book Fair. Focusing on “Asianness,”
actors of the artists’ book scene from different cities participate with their
own selection of art publications, revealing different cultural perspectives.

The project follows the
curatorial motto “Nomadic and Imagined” and is shown in the form of a growing
traveling exhibition: the Vienna Art Book Fair (VABF) presents a total of 57 books, 52 of which were selected
by the previous participants and already exhibited in their spaces. Following
the concept of Book Nomad, VABF includes 5 more publications by this year
participating artists and publishers to the book list, which will be shown and
further added together with the other publications in the following exhibition
venues as well.

Especially since the
pandemic, abC has been promoting collaboration and exchange with international
art publishing communities. Through Book Nomad the initiative aims to bring
cutting-edge, independent art publications from China and other countries to a

Self-Shelf:
private (artists’) book collections made public.

“The
formation of a library is a creative and cultural act, and collections of
books—whether read or not—are conduits for self-definition.”
Melanie
Bigold, in Louis Porter,
A Catalogue of a Young Country Ladies Library
(London:
Self-published, 2023), n.p.

S P I N O
R A M A and Quotes about Books from Books about Books are part of the ongoing exhibition
series Self-Shelf: private (artists’) book collections made public, curated by
Jae Kyung Kim (einBuch.haus).

Many
people have their own criteria for collecting books—especially artists,
curators, and designers from the artist book scene. Self-Shelf is a longterm, irregular
but continuous curatorial program that explores private book collections
through evolving thematic lenses. The series continues to expand over time,
encompassing topics such as books as curated archives, print-on-demand publications,
wooden book covers, artworks in newspaper format, blank books, and more. Each
theme proposes a new way of engaging with books—not merely as vessels of
knowledge, but as conceptual, material, and artistic objects. To present these
private bookshelves as a temporary library, einBuch.haus thoughtfully employs
its exhibition architecture to frame each collection in dialogue with its
specific theme. This approach enables an in-depth exploration of individual
collections and offers insight into how books operate both as carriers of
meaning and as artworks within their respective thematic contexts.

einBuch.haus
is a project gallery based in Berlin. The central exhibition ethos is to
showcase a book in the form of an exhibition (in German: “Ein Buch in Form
einer Ausstellung”) thereby transferring the form of a book into
three-dimensional spaces. The exhibition programme features international artists
and designers whose work responds to the medium of artists’ books. Starting
from the content and material production of a book, einBuch.haus collaborates
with the artists to develop the exhibition into various media and
presentations. With an interdisciplinary approach, the programme highlights and
enhances both the visual and tactile aspects of the reading experience. Since
2022, einBuch.haus has also been operating as a publishing house and publishing
exhibitions in book format.

	S P I N O
R A M AProject Room 1
S P I N O
R A M A is the
first exhibition dedicated to the book spine, a crucial yet often overlooked element
of book design. With over 100 spines on display from various genres, this
exhibition highlights the spine’s role as more than just a structural feature. While
most books spend their lives on a shelf with only their spines visible, their
design and creative potential are rarely explored. Historically, spines have
been undervalued in both design and production, treated as utilitarian spaces for
basic information— author, title, and publisher. Designers like Jost Hochuli
and Jan Tschichold, however, argued that the spine is a reader’s first encounter
with the book and carries subtle signals about its content and form. This
exhibition challenges the traditional view of the spine as purely functional.
Examples include book series where multiple spines create a single image, or
spines that present unexpected information, turning a utilitarian space into a
site for creativity.

S P I N O
R A M A invites
viewers to see the spine as the backbone not only of the book’s structure but also
its narrative and artistic identity. The exhibition is curated by Aslak Gurholt
and Fraser Muggeridge. The project has previously been exhibited at London
Centre for Book Arts (5 July–17 August
2024), Gent Art Book Fair (3-4 May 2025) and einBuch.haus (16 June-5 July
2025). The exhibition was not seen as an end of a project, but the beginning of
further investigation of the book spine. Since then new findings and
contributions have been added to an expanding spine archive.

Aslak
Gurholt is a graphic designer, artist, author, and curator based in Oslo,
Norway. His practice primarily focuses on books and printed matter,
exhibitions, and collaborations with cultural institutions. Collecting, referencing,
and remixing are important aspects of much of his work.
@aslakgurholt

Fraser
Muggeridge is a typographic designer based in London. Throughout a wide range
of formats, from artists’ books and exhibition catalogues to posters, marketing
material, exhibitions, websites, film titles and music, his work prioritises
artists’ and writers’ content over the imposition of a signature style. By
allowing images and texts to sustain their own intent and impact, each project
is approached with typographic form and letterform playing a key role in
arriving at a sympathetic yet subtly alluring object.

Quotes
about Books from Books about BooksProject Room 2
Quotes
about Books from Books about Books is an artist’s book, an exhibition, and a library
of books about books, including periodicals, journals, exhibition catalogues,
zines, monographs, and artists’ books spanning 1974–2025. Edited and compiled by
Sveinn Fannar Jóhannsson, the project presents 148 quotes, drawn from his
archive of printed matter, that reflect on the book as medium, material, and metaphor.
The accompanying exhibition makes each source publication physically accessible
to visitors—creating a participatory experience that mirrors the democratic
ethos of independent publishing.

Historically,
publishing has allowed artists to reclaim control over their work and operate
outside commercial or institutional frameworks—a tradition this project draws
on. By compiling and sequencing excerpts from a broad spectrum of artistic and
theoretical publications, it interrogates the formal and conceptual boundaries
of print culture and bookmaking.
The
selected quotes address themes such as the economic realities of production,
freedom of the press, authorship, and the artist’s book as a political object.
The project also considers the book as an exhibition space, an object that
resists categorization, and a self-reflexive medium. Some quotes further reflect
on the materiality of books in more abstract or experimental terms. At its
core, the project engages with long-standing debates around what a book is—or
might be—questions that continue to shape contemporary publishing practices.
Subtitled Revised, Reversed, Revisited Edition, the publication resists
conventional ordering, unfolding according to its own internal logic. Through excerpting,
recontextualizing, and cataloguing, it explores how books articulate their own
conditions of production, distribution, and reception.

Sveinn
Fannar Jóhannsson is an artist and self-publisher. Through his imprint
Multinational Enterprises (est. 2012), he produces printed matter that examines
publishing as artistic practice. His work explores the book as object, archive,
and conceptual medium, using systems of categorization and citation to play with
the ideological frameworks embedded in print— often with a deadpan sense of
humour.

Morley House

You live with someone in the same
room, and they go for a walk alone. What happens in that space?
— Morley House, ‘UNTITLED. Act I:
MANUSCRIPT’

From a Seed to a Star is an exhibition of paintings
grappling with feelings of proximity, distance, isolation, and unity. How close
is too close, and how do we as humans sense boundaries between things?

From tiny seeds nested in soil to
almost incomprehensible distances between celestial bodies – the exhibition
explores how we coexist – with ourselves, our partners, or in larger
systems.

The show continues the study of how
human beings live together that Morley House started through UNTITLED,
a project in 5 acts unfolding during 2025.

Morley House (Dinara Asadulina &
Christos Kakouros) is an artist duo working at the crossroads of visual art and
literature. They make artists' books, paintings, installations, and
performances, and see them as vessels, depositories for narratives, comprised
of textual and physical elements. The in-between is their meeting point.

Renate Kordon (*1952, Graz)
is an Austrian visual artist. She is best known for experimental animation,
public art, multimedia art, and drawings. The opening of the Vienna Art Book
Fair #2 will be accompanied by the animated Short-Film “Fabuli”. The artist
used the drawings she made for the children’s book of the same name, published
in 1980, as a template for this.
The book is exclusively available at her booth, Table G9.

in Vienna – Observations on Urban Change

In ihrer vergleichenden Studie

Robin Waart & Kunstraum LakesideLakeside Library Lakeside Library is a duplicate of Kunstraum Lakeside’s bookshelf. This unsystematic but ‘biographical’ library comprises 420 artist’s publications and theory books accumulated since the founding of the space in 2005. Re-collected in its entirety and in response to the Kunstraum’s presentation furniture (an artistic intervention by Josef Dabernig, itself conceived in pairs) the shelf formed an integral element of the group exhibition Wörthersee, Wörtersee – a network of relationships. Here, transferred to VABF#2, the copied library exists in parallel with, but also independently from, its identical counterpart in Klagenfurt.
Kunstraum Lakeside’s, Robin Waart’s and some other artists’ publications will be available at Project Room 1.

Ongoing exhibitionProject Room 2
Book Nomad

On Book WasteTalk by Marc Fischer, Half Letter Press / Temporary
Services, USA

Half Letter Press (US) is a
publishing imprint and online store initiated by the group Temporary Services.
Temporary Services is Brett Bloom & Marc Fischer. They have published
booklets as an element of their collaborative work since 1998. Temporary Services
started Half Letter Press in 2008 to publish work by others and build long-term
support and expanded audiences for people that work creatively in experimental
ways.

For this talk, Marc will give an
overview of their publishing history and present Artist Publishers Reflect on
Book Waste. Building on previous publications like Book Waste Book,
Self-Reliance Library and What Problems Can Artist Publishers Solve? in this
new title 7 artist publishers reflect on their experiences of waste in the
making of their books. They describe problems they faced in the past and are
working to avoid in the future, lessons learned, changes they are making or
have made to make their work less wasteful, interesting things they do with
waste materials, and tips or tricks to have a less ecologically damaging
publishing practice.

Bernhard Cella in conversation with Thomas MetznerBook presentation and machine

Thomas
Metzner. Stille Post
„Sie
lächelte mit einem anderen Ohr.“ / “And He smiled another ear.“ -
Übersetzungsprogramme funktionieren mittels Datenbanken und algorithmischem
Zugriff.
Was spricht?

She smiled with another
ear." / "And He smiled another ear." - Translation programs
function through databases and algorithmic access. In the process, they produce
semantic errors and aesthetic extras, poetic coincidences. ...and this idea:
simulating the children's game "Chinese whispers" with Google
Translate. The game instructions and a motto are repeatedly translated by a
computer: semantically pruned and aesthetically blossomed. Specifically: Kant's
maxim "Sapere aude..." (to illuminate your starting point) derived
from Google-Afrikaans to Google-Zulu into Google-German (or Google-English). -
What moves in the field between different text strings / world references /
idioms: "homo ludens" and "homo sapiens"? - What is
speaking?

With the publication "SCHWEIZER KÜNSTLERBÜCHER - LIVRES D'ARTISTES SUISSES - LIBRI D'ARTISTA SVIZZERI - SWISS ARTISTS' BOOKS" the NL plans to close a gap and present an overview of the artist's book as a media phenomenon with a multicultural character in Switzerland since the 1950s. Based on many years of constant research into its own collection - nota bene the most comprehensive collection of artists' books in our country - the publication aims to question the artist's book as the product of an overall artistic achievement and define it as a Swiss cultural phenomenon with an international dimension.
